During Your Assessment

What is an independent psychological assessment?

An independent psychological assessment is carried out to provide an objective psychological opinion for legal or professional purposes. It is not a therapy or treatment session.

What will happen during my assessment?

During your appointment, the psychologist will:

  • Discuss the circumstances relevant to your assessment.
  • Explore your psychological symptoms and wellbeing.
  • Review the impact on your daily life, employment, education, and relationships.
  • Consider relevant medical records and supporting documentation where available.
  • Conduct a comprehensive psychological assessment.

What should I talk about?

Please discuss all symptoms and difficulties that you believe are relevant, including:

Helpful Advice

Providing honest and accurate information helps ensure a fair, comprehensive and clinically informed assessment.

Will I complete questionnaires?

Where appropriate, you may be asked to complete validated psychological questionnaires as part of your assessment.

Can someone attend with me?

Yes. You may bring a family member, friend, carer or support person if appropriate.

Children and young people must attend with a parent or legal guardian.

Should I bring identification?

Please bring photographic identification where possible, together with any documents requested before your appointment.

The Expert Witness

Does the psychologist represent me?

No.

The psychologist is an independent expert witness whose overriding duty is to the Court. They do not act on behalf of either party and provide impartial, objective, and evidence-based opinions.

What happens after my assessment?

Following your appointment, an independent psychological report will be prepared and sent to the instructing solicitor, organisation, insurer, or Court, as appropriate.

Reports

How long will my report take?

Reports are normally completed within 5–10 working days, subject to receipt of all relevant documentation and the complexity of the case.

Can the report be changed?

Requests for clarification or factual corrections will be considered where appropriate.

As an independent expert witness, professional independence must always be maintained and not all requested amendments can be accepted.

Do I need to pay?
